To the Sky

was inspired by the sound and color of brass band music — a style I’ve always admired for its brilliance, warmth, and energy. This composition is written for Euphonium-Tuba Ensemble in the form of a short overture, intended as an opening piece for my graduation concert.

I chose this ensemble because of its deep, resonant, and mellow sound, which perfectly matches the imagery I wanted to express. The piece combines brightness and depth, excitement and lyricism, reflecting both the playful and heartfelt sides of brass music.

The inspiration for this work also came from my own photographs of the sky. Each picture was taken from the same location but at different times of day, under varying light and weather conditions. Together, they revealed an emotional and imaginative spectrum — just as this piece explores many moods and colors within a single ensemble.

To the Sky invites listeners to drift upward, to feel the freedom and wonder of floating among the clouds, and to dream boundlessly beneath the vast expanse of the sky.
